lalita sahasranama Kamakshi

कामाक्षी STANDS as She who has beautiful eyes or whose eyes awaken desire for liberation

Mantra S adhana & Benefits

Salutations to the Mother Divine (Sri Mata), the look of whose eyes is full of grace, compassion and mercy for the universe.

Upon emerging from Chidagni to address the devakarya or prayers of the Devas, the Divine Mother journeyed to the Sahasrara and took her seat on the left side of Kamesha on the Panchabrahmasana. Witnessing this, Brahma proposed to bestow upon her a fitting name. He inquired of the assembled devas about any lingering desires they had, since their yagna had been primarily conducted to vanquish Bhandasura, a demon who had caused them great suffering.

The devas, however, declared that all their desires were fulfilled with just a glance from her, an experience of Bliss so profound and typically elusive. Acknowledging this miraculous effect of her mere gaze, Brahma christened the Divine Mother as Kamakshi. Kamakshi possesses three eyes, each symbolizing the forces of creation (Shrusti), sustenance (Sthithi), and dissolution (Laya). From one eye sprang Brahma and Saraswathi, another bore Vishnu and Lakshmi, and from the eye on her forehead emerged Uma and Maheshwara.

These eyes of the Mother are central to the concepts of Shrusti, Sthithi, and Laya and are symbolized by the alphabets or aksharas क (KA), अ (A), and म (MA). Since these aksharas arose from Her ‘akshi’ or eyes, she is revered as Kamakshi

Vedic Mantra Wisdom:

She who possesses enchanting eyes, or whose gaze kindles a yearning for liberation, is revered for awakening the highest aspiration of life: spiritual awakening. She is also venerated as the one whose eyes embody Saraswati (knowledge, represented by ‘ka’) and Lakshmi (material wealth, symbolized by ‘ma’). For those who worship the Devi, the pursuit of knowledge and material prosperity are significant goals. These attributes are as natural to her as her two eyes, which generously bestow blessings upon her devotees
