The Divine Mother’s adornments and garments are typically depicted in red. This color choice is not merely aesthetic but carries a deeper symbolic meaning. In her engagement with the universe’s functions—creation, sustenance, and destruction—she embodies a rajasic (active, dynamic) nature, and red is representative of this rajasic quality. In the cosmic interplay of energies, Shiva is identified with Prakasa (illumination or consciousness), while Devi is associated with Vimarsha (reflection or deliberation). The color red is emblematic of Vimarsha, mirroring her dynamic and active role in cosmic processes.
The name “Aruna” appears in the Lalita Sahasranama, starting from the twelfth name, “Nijāruṇa-prabhā-pūra-majjad-brahmāṇḍa-manḍalā,” and culminating with the name “Sarvāruṇā.” This signifies that everything is immersed in a reddish hue, symbolizing the divine presence of Devi. Her entire form is enveloped in this reddish glow, with a distinctive radiance emanating from the tender underside of her feet. The crimson light radiating from her embodies the illumination that lights up the entire universe.
Vedic Mantra Wisdom:
The Kalas, or rays, emanating from Devi are of three types: Agni (fire), Surya (sun), and Chandra (moon). These three forms represent the fundamental sources of energy for the universe. Correspondingly, within our bodies, these energies manifest as Surya for sight, Agni for speech and digestion, and Chandra for the mind and emotions. Devi is the origin of all these three Kalas.
Creation and the concept of time are intrinsically linked to the rays emerging from her feet. The six seasons (Ritus) constitute a year, each influenced by these divine energies. Though there are six Ritus, the Kalas are three, representing the essential qualities of summer, autumn, and monsoon, which correspond to heat, cold, and rain. Specifically, Agni signifies summer, Chandra symbolizes winter, and Surya is associated with rain or a monsoon.
In terms of their rays, Agni has 108 rays, Surya has 116 rays, and Chandra has 136 rays. Collectively, these add up to 360 rays, forming a complete circle, symbolizing the Viswa Chakra (universe or space) and Kala Chakra (time). These rays, originating from Devi’s feet, envelop the entire Brahmanda (universe) in a comprehensive and divine reddish glow.
